There is a certain electricity that runs through Paul Clüver Family Wines when a new vintage begins to reveal itself, and the first 2025 releases under the estate’s Village label arrive with all the brightness and intent one could hope for. These are not merely entry-point wines; they are statements of place, precision and poise, drawn from the younger vineyards yet speaking with a clarity that belies their positioning.
The Village tier is one of three expressions in the estate’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir portfolio, and its role is as vital as it is inviting. Crafted in an accessible, fruit-driven style, the wines open the door to everyday enjoyment while retaining the elegance and quiet authority that have long defined these two Burgundian noble cultivars. It is a balancing act that Andries Burger and his team execute with calm confidence.
And what a vintage to introduce the latest Paul Clüver Wines Village range. The 2025 growing season in Elgin will be remembered as one of those rare alignments where nature seems to conspire in favour of the vine. A cold, wet winter delivered over 800mm of rain, replenishing soils and invigorating the estate’s regenerative cover crops. From there, the season unfolded with measured grace: slow, even ripening through spring, followed by a notably cool January that locked in the firm, natural acidity so prized in both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
“The fruit quality yielded in 2025 was just superb,” says Burger, and there is no hint of hyperbole. “Grapes were healthy, acid-to-sugar ratios were precise, and both varieties show terrific varietal character.” Moderate daytime temperatures paired with fresh, cool nights ensured that the fruit developed depth without excess, definition without weight. In short, the vines were allowed to speak clearly, and they have done so.
In the cellar, the approach is thoughtful rather than interventionist. The Village Chardonnay undergoes spontaneous fermentation before spending ten months maturing across a tapestry of vessels: stainless steel, 2 500-litre foudre, concrete eggs and older French oak barrels. Natural yeasts and extended lees contact of ten months bring texture and resonance without masking the wine’s innate vitality.
The Pinot Noir, after fermentation and gentle daily punch-downs, is guided into twelve months of maturation in foudre and older barrels. The aim is not to sculpt, but to frame, allowing the fruit to find its own equilibrium within a structure that supports rather than dictates.
In the glass, the results are immediate and compelling. The Village Chardonnay 2025 is all lift and luminosity: bright citrus unfurls alongside white blossom, with a core of succulent green pear. There is freshness here, certainly, but also a subtle layering that hints at the grape’s deeper narrative.
The Village Pinot Noir 2025, meanwhile, moves with a different rhythm: supple, expressive, and quietly seductive. Juicy cherry and plum form the opening refrain, before yielding to that unmistakable whisper of forest floor and wild mushroom, the savoury undertone that gives Pinot Noir its enduring allure.
The wines are available at a recommended retail price of R165.00.
