The Right Wine for the Right Easter Egg

When it comes to the many delights of Easter, the pairing of wine and Easter eggs is one of this special holiday’s most delicious prospects. Yes, sweet, chocolatey and decadent they may be for the accompanying of wine, but after years of trials and tribulations a few of Paul Clüver Family Wines’ culinary advisers have made their choice as to the best Easter egg and wine combination.

The popular Crème Egg is one of Easter’s richest, luxurious offerings. This small, heavy egg comprises a thick shell of milk chocolate which, once bitten into, gives way to a dense creamy centre of cheek-puckering sweetness. As this luxurious, headily sweet mixture of saccharine cream and chocolate coats the palate, it is hard to think of a wine that could possibly complement this Easter treat. Yet, look no further than Chardonnay.

Copious, rigorous research by the team of gourmands tasked with seeking a wine to accompany the partaking of a Crème Egg found that Chardonnay is best suited to this ostentatiously sugared Easter treat. The bright citrus notes of the Chardonnay and its long, cool palate presence temper the sweetness of the Crème Egg, after which the wine rinses the cloying chocolate and cream-filling. Freshness exudes from the wine, momentarily binding with the egg’s unctuous nectar to provide an enticing dimension of flavour that is bold, delicious and richly festive.

Village Chardonnay

This wine is a beautifully poised expression of Chardonnay with notes of citrus and citrus blossom followed by aromas of white peach and a maritime salinity. The energetic, fresh palate is long and lingering with a delicate, fine finish.

An Easter egg more modest in its candy-like offering is the Marshie, which comprises a thin, slight layer of chocolate covering a flat expanse of marshmallow. These eggs are an integral part of Easter as their accessibility and lightness on the palate allows one to snack on them throughout the day and night, making the Marshie truly habit forming.

And this egg known as the Marshie is, according to aforementioned culinary advisers, just made for enjoying with Pinot Noir.

Because the sweetness of the Marshie is less focused than the direct sugar-thrust of the Crème Egg, it lies broader and lighter on the palate. Here a sip of Pinot Noir bonds, instantaneously with the marshmallow and chocolate, the cherry and berry notes of the Pinot Noir expanding the flavour combination to one of diverse delectability. The slight tannic grip of the Pinot Noir also ensures a dry finish, readying the palate for the next Marshie egg and wine insertion and the providing of festive enjoyment.

Village Pinot Noir

This wine has a classic, evocative garnet colour with aromas of dark fruit and wild-brush. On the palate tastes of sour-cherry and cranberry are present, with an intriguing whisper of rose-petal. This medium-bodied wine is fresh and alert, with the soft edges and supple tannins elevating the flavours to delicious heights of Pinot noir pleasure. Crafted to drink and enjoy now.
